At the end of the 80s` I\u00a0suggested to our Department that one semester subject\u00a0Analyses of discourse\u00a0should be\u00a0introduced into curriculum. That was accepted, so I created the program of that course.\u00a0Soon, based on teaching experience, \u00a0I wrote a textbook entitled\u00a0Discourse analyses(Svenka\u00a0Savich, 1993). \u00a0Next year, also on my suggestion, that subject became two-semester course\u00a0for students in final years of studies. Analyses of discourse can be taught in various ways\u00a0because it is an interdisciplinary field where language, culture and ideology intertwine.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0&#8230;\u00a0Disintegration of common Serbo-Croatian language domain into individual languages\u00a0also touches upon understanding of language identity, primarily that in public and official\u00a0use. It was shown that newly-formed political elite in the newly-formed country (that\u00a0successively changed its names from Yugoslavia to Serbia and Montenegro to Republic of\u00a0Serbia) was well aware that language was the means to homogenize the nation and that it\u00a0was important that state took care of the language as its mighty instrument. Thus, several\u00a0frameworks for national language identity were already outlined in the<strong> Law on the official\u00a0use of language<\/strong> (1991) and\u00a0<strong>The Serbian language orthography<\/strong>\u00a0(Mitar Peshikan, John\u00a0Yerkovich and Mato Pizhuritza, 1993) and later on when the Committee for standardization\u00a0of the Serbian language was formed in 1997. In those state documents there were no\u00a0indications that a care would be taken about equality of \u201cothers\u201d (there were just implicit\u00a0terms about that), which also excluded gender sensitive talk and anything related to language\u00a0discrimination.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>&#8230;\u00a0The objective was to prove the thesis about existence of patriarchal matrix for visibility of women\u00a0in public and official language and to explain the mechanism of ideologization of language\u00a0for the sake of patriarchization and conveying that matrix to new generations. The issue\u00a0of standardizing gender equality in language is above all a political issue, not the issue of\u00a0structure of Serbian language. As a finish of many years of collecting empirical material for\u00a0the issue of gender and language, we published a book<strong>\u00a0Gender and language<\/strong>\u00a0(Svenka Savich\u00a0et al. 2009). In the book, we presented a basic dictionary of professions and titles held by\u00a0women in Serbian language and concrete rules on how to apply gender sensitive language\u00a0in practice, primarily in official and public domain.
