Philanthropic culture is mainly aimed at humanitarian causes. On the other hand, it is not a secret that there are bad practices when rich individuals are left to decide on common good. Our idea is that feminist philanthropy best meets its mission of political changes when it carries clear articulations heading towards achieving justice and creating equality with the horizon of anti-nationalist and anti-racist non-violent society. Support to organizations’ work, not charity! Support to joint struggles, not the savior syndrome!
In order to better understand why feminist philanthropy is our future, we are starting a new series of interviews and videos in which we will think and speak loudly, and try to respond to the question why do we donate?.
Tania Turner holds a B.A. in Sociology and a Master’s degree in Political and Social Sciences from the UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico). She has been a monitoring and evaluation analyst for Freedom House Mexico and Research in Health, and Demographics (Insad). She is part of Rizoma Collective, focused on recovering traditional knowledge and urban gardening.
Tanja Bjelanović, is an activist who work in the field of philanthropy and sustainable development for the last two decades. She lives what she believes in, so besides her professional enrollment she is an individual donor to many development organizations and many feminist causes. Her publication „Towards financial sustainability of civil sector organizations in Serbia“ explains new ideas and models of financing in the civil sector.
Nataša Kovačević was born in former Yugoslavia, she graduated in English Department at the University of Belgrade and got her PhD at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Currently, she is a professor of English language and literatures at the Eastern Michigan University and editor of literary journal JNT: Journal of Narrative Theory.
CC Oktobar is a leftist community center that strives to achieve sustainability – mainly not through projects and donations, but primarily due to the fact that its members invest their free time into the idea of importance of having such an autonomous center while other progressive groups can also use its premises free of charge.
Jelena Todorović, born in Leskovac, graduated in the Italian Department at the University of Belgrade and got her PhD at the Indiana University Bloomington. She is the first in her family to attend college, and she is using her experience to support first-generation students at her University and help them navigate all spheres of university life, to identify resources at the university, and use efficiently the advantages university offers.
Annie Hillar has over 20 years of experience in feminist philanthropy. working with PAWHR (Philanthropy Advancing Women’s Human Rights), Mama Cash, Global Fund for Women, serving on the PEX Co-Creation Council and as Co-Chair of the Steering Committee of the Human Rights Funders Network.
Josiane Smith is the Key Programmes Lead for the Social Innovation Exchange (SIX).. In this role, Josiane is responsible for the SIX Wayfinder, Funders Node, and Global Council – core programmes that build the field of social innovation within different sectors and countries.
